Can’t eject CD - iMac - OS 9

September 8th, 2005 by Brandon
I have a CD in my drive that will not eject. I tried using the eject button on the keyboard, and that didn’t work. I tried looking for the disc on the desktop but it wasn’t there either. My computer is a blue iMac running OS 9.2. Thank you!

This isn’t a very common problem. It sounds like the CD drive isn’t recognizing the CD at all, if it were, you would hear a spinning sound at startup, and you should see the disk on the desktop of you iMac. The first thing you want to check is to make sure you actually have a CD stuck in the slot. If you have confirmed that, read on.

I have heard of people spending hundreds of dollars to fix this issue and you can fix it in a few simple steps. Please note that this it at your discretion and we will not be held responsible or liable for any damages you may incur as a result of following the following steps.

On the very right side of your CD slot is a little hole. Open a paperclip up and stick one end into that hole and press carefully until you feel a click. That is the manual eject mode. You computer has to be on for this to work.

If that does not eject the CD out of your iMac, take two new paperclips, and wrap some clear tape around them so the sticky side is out. Make sure you put enough tape so that it doesn’t come off inside of the machine’s CD drive.

Take those two paperclips and slide them both into the CD slot with one angled up, and one angled down. Then press them towards the middle so you can attempt to grab the CD between the paperclips.

After you have come together with the paperclips and grabbed the CD from the iMac slot, pull it out, slowly and carefully.

This is how I was able to remove a CD in an old iMac that wouldn’t eject it normally. If that doesn’t work for you, please submit a comment and we’ll look into it further.

Thank you,
